Santa Barbara Winemakers.
April 2007 Edition.

With Hospice du Rhône soon to be upon us, it seemed appropriate to give a little taster of a couple of our upcoming winemaking stars. They have been featured before but this is a new cut from the Mac and Russel Barrel 27 interview. What are the sounds and smells of viognier, how to get your wines into the public arena and most importantly, how to have fun doing the marketing?
Mac and Russel are two of the nicest guys you can come across. If you find one, the other isn't far away. Talk about a profound friendship and a talented team, they are the dynamic duo. Rhone to the Bone. Mac is also sporting a fine example of Hospice wear that no self respecting winemaker should be without.

Jerry Wilson from Alisal Wine interview for Mac
This month we feature Jerry Wilson. This is a little step back from the winemaking videos, here we can see how bottles are engraved. Jerry took a year off from making wines because of the number of requests he had for his engraving techniques. When we got over to film him he was engraving gin bottles, nevertheless this is still an interesting process. For those of you who haven't tried his wines, Jerry makes a delicious syrah. His label designs have also won him some awards. Welcome to the world of wine meeting art. The real treat is that now we have included the Windows Media Video version as well as Quicktime. For future reference all videos will be available in both formats.
We've also noticed some of you are having problems with Internet Explorer, try the Firefox web browser instead, download it for free here.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of Ramon Cisneros Acosta, 42, and Rogelio Ruiz Reyes, 29, both of Lompoc. They helped to produce some of the best fruit coming out of the Santa Rita Hills working at the Clos Pepe vineyard. Their loss is a shock to the local community.

On May 1 and 2 Bridlewood Estate Winery is hosting an invitation-only winemaking symposium about Syrah.
A good idea too on many levels, before that movie came out we were watching a resurgence of Rhones in Santa Barbara spearheaded by the likes of Bridlewood with their limited production "flavour profiled" syrah's. It seems the list of participants is limited, possibly due to scheduling but should realistically be all encompassing. Beckmen and Zaca Mesa are both attending and are both solid Rhone producers, Fess Parker is listed as too are Palmeri from Geyserville. No idea of the order of events and things but I'd like to see a serious discussion about the merits of syrah from SRH and SYV and SMV and any research done on the peppery over jammy over spicy. David Hopkins is also the master of barrel use when it comes to developing the unique properties in his syrah.
Cheers
